Creating a Valentine’s Day box has become a new tradition for grade school kids in the 21st century. The design for this Valentine’s Day box is clever, because although it looks like a giant cupcake, there’s a secret slot for inserting Valentine cards. The top of the cupcake is created with the Styrofoam dome, and a hole is cut in the dome to create a clever place for cards to be inserted into the box. Cover the hole with the cherry, and you have a perfectly adorable cupcake!
When your box is full of messages from secret and not-so-secret admirers, the box lid opens easily to access the mail. You can even customize the materials to create the cupcake of your dreams — just choose a different color of tissue paper to make a cupcake in your favorite flavor. You can even add sprinkles!

You don’t have to have kids to make this craft, though! Make one for yourself and use it for your holiday decor, or as a Valentine’s Day mailbox for your work cubicle. Substitute faux flowers for a more “grown-up” version of the cupcake.
For this project, you’ll find most of the supplies at your local craft store and dollar store or big box store. If you make the faux flower version, the dollar store is a great source of inexpensive blooms.
This cute craft can also be used for birthday decor, as wrap for a birthday gift, or for a card holder for a wedding or a baby shower.

Outline a circle in the dome
Hold the small ball up to the dome and draw a quick outline with pencil, outline a circle the size of the Styrofoam ball. The hole should be large enough for cards to pass through, but not so large the ball completely passes through.
Cut a hole
Cut inside the line, and start with a smaller hole, then measure the ball to see if it fits.
Wrap styrofoam ball
Use a sheet of red tissue paper to wrap the ball. Twist the end to secure, and add a dab of hot glue if desired.
Fold paper
Accordion fold the sheets of red glitter scrapbook paper (like you would fold a fan) about four times each.
Add glue
Carefully glue the end of each piece of scrapbook paper to the outside of the bucket, wrapping the papers all the way around the bucket. Then, cut the pink tissue paper into squares, about 4-6” each, or four squares per tissue sheet.
Poke holes
Mark holes for tissue paper using the other end of the exacto knife.
Cover dome
Bunch each tissue sheet in the center and hot glue each bunch to the dome, covering the entire dome with lovely pink tissue frosting.
Finish cupcake
To finish the cupcake, place the cherry on top.
Add sprinkles
If desired, create “sprinkles” on the top of the cupcake by gluing confetti to the tissue paper.
