Saute onion, bell pepper and garlic in butter
In a large skillet over medium-high heat, melt the butter. Add chopped onion, green bell pepper and garlic to the skillet. Cook, stirring often, until the onion is tender and translucent.
Add turkey, tomatoes, hot sauce, herbs and seasonings
Add the shredded turkey, crushed tomatoes and hot sauce to the onion mixture. Season with salt and pepper. Cook the turkey mixture, stirring occasionally, until it is heated through. Stir in Italian seasoning and fresh basil.
Assemble the shepherd’s pie
Pour the turkey mixture into a baking dish set on a parchment-lined baking sheet; the baking sheet will catch any melted cheese that bubbles over the side of the baking dish. Spread the turkey mixture evenly in the dish and cover with the mashed potatoes, using a spatula to completely encase the turkey mixture. Evenly sprinkle the shredded mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses over the mashed potatoes.
Bake the shepherd’s pie
Place the shepherd’s pie into the oven and bake for 30 minutes at 375F. The cheese will melt and become bubbly. Remove from the oven and garnish with fresh parsley. Serve hot.
