If you have some lonely socks — you know, the ones that lost their mates and ended up alone in a drawer — this tube sock snowman craft project is a cool way to repurpose them!
Best of all, the finished product is adorable. Make a couple for your own home’s holiday decor, then create one or two for a friend. These also make sweet gifts for a teacher, and can be pretty popular items at holiday fundraisers.
New life for old socks
One big way that this craft is a winner is that it’s so easy — no sewing or special skills required. That simplicity also means these are great DIY projects to work on with kids (as long as an adult is there to supervise and help with the hot glue gun).
These snowmen are also inexpensive to make, because the most important supplies are those solo socks that you weren’t using anyway.

Fill the snowman’s body with rice
Because each one is filled with rice, it has a little weight to it, so your snowman won’t tip over easily.

Making a colorful winter hat for your tube sock snowman craft
Directions to make a tube sock snowman
- As in the video, use a funnel to fill one white tube sock with rice.
- Once you have a good amount of rice in the sock, knot the top near the end of the filling and trim the excess fabric.
- Roll a rubber band down the white tube sock, making two round sections (like snowballs).
- Using the colorful/patterned sock, cut off the toe portion of the sock, and fold it as shown to make a winter hat. Place it on the head of the snowman.
- Hot-glue three buttons down the center of the bottom portion.
- Glue the eyes, then the nose, then the mouth, as shown in photos and video.
- Tie the ribbon around the neck of the snowman.
- If you like, repeat the process with slightly different colors and button placements to create a companion snowperson!

The result: cute snowmen (well, snowpeople, because you dress and decorate these cuties any way you like)! And because they never melt, you can enjoy these decorations year after year.
