Good things often come in threes, like those fabled three little words. Our passion of love cocktail easily conveys that special message with just three simple ingredients. Its foundation: Grand Marnier, a staple of every good bar.
Back in the 1800s, Frenchman Louis-Alexandre Marnier Lapostolle experimented with blending premium cognac with a rare variety of oranges from the Caribbean. It was an indulgent idea: Oranges were exotic, expensive luxury items usually enjoyed only on holidays such as Christmas.
ALSO TRY: Chocolate espresso martini
The citrus-infused cognac was an immediate hit and has been considered a top-shelf liqueur ever since. It adds a bright, citrusy flavor not only to beverages but also to a wide variety of foods (especially desserts, such as crepes). Sure, you can use other orange liqueurs in a pinch, but we highly recommend the premium flavor of Grand Marnier.
Cherry liqueur offsets the sweet-tart taste of oranges. When shopping for this ingredient, bear in mind that it comes in a few variations. Generally, liqueur is sweet and dark or colored, while kirsch is unsweetened. (Don’t use kirsch in place of liqueur — it will give your cocktail an intense alcohol flavor.)
You can always make your own cherry liqueur, too, if you have time and patience. All it takes is real cherries, brandy and sugar.
For a smooth, creamy finish that feels like heaven on your tongue, top this cocktail with a layer of real cream.
This cocktail looks so pretty and tastes even better, with a zingy flavor that sweetly embodies la passion de l’amour.
