This apple pie dump cake makes dessert simple and quick with help from a store-bought cake mix.

Never heard of a “dump cake” before? Sure, it’s not the best name. Let’s explain. Basically, a dump cake is a cake recipe that includes a boxed cake, made better by adding in other ingredients. The dump cake became popular in recent years thanks, in large part, to kitchen queen Ree Drummond, aka. The Pioneer Woman.
Plus, it’s an easy, quick dessert that will end any meal on a high note. This recipe ends up tasting like an apple crisp without the oats.
For our apple pie dump cake, we used a golden butter cake mix and combined it with apple pie filling, butter and apple pie spice. Yup, it’s that simple.
We recommend serving this recipe with some whipped cream or vanilla bean ice cream.
How to make an apple pie dump cake
Start by spreading the apple pie filling in an even coat along the bottom of a greased pan.
Sprinkle the entire box of cake mix on top of the filling.
Drizzle melted butter over the top. Do not mix. Allow the layers to stand as they are.
Sprinkle with apple pie spice and bake.
You’ll know this recipe is ready to come out of the oven when the top is browned. Usually about 40 minutes.

Apple Pie Dump Cake
Ingredients
- 2 (21 ounce) cans apple pie filling
- 1 box yellow cake mix
- ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon apple pie spice
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees and spray a 9x13 pan with non-stick spray.
- Put apple pie filling into the pan and cover the bottom evenly.
- Sprinkle dry cake mix over the top of the apple pie filling and drizzle the melted butter over top the cake mix. Cover the top evenly with apple pie spice.
- Add pan to the preheated oven and bake for about 40-45 minutes or until the top of the cake is browned.
- Let cool for a few minutes and scoop out the dump cake and serve with whipped cream or ice cream if desired.
