If you’re going to make a Cinco de Mayo flower crown, mere flowers alone will not suffice. This is Cinco de Mayo, after all — the official holiday of chips, cheese, guacamole and salsa. You need a crown that’s not only fit for a queen, but fit for a queen who loves to eat.

I should clarify: Don’t eat the flowers. That could get weird. Instead, eat out of containers that are attached to your head and filled with said holiday chow.
Here’s how to create a festive flower crown that serves as an appetizer and inevitable conversation starter. You’ll be the life of the party.
What you’ll need:
- Coiled wire
- 20-gauge stem wire
- Fresh flowers (prices vary, but I found mine for about $4.99 each at Trader Joe’s; I chose red, white and green to represent the Mexican flag)
- 4 4-ounce plastic cups
- Floral tape
- Optional: Fake foam limes for extra flair
Directions:
- Measure the coiled wire to fit the circumference of your head. Cut the measured length with pliers, and wrap the ends to secure the circular shape.
- Using the stem wire, attach two to four plastic cups to the crown (or heck, as many as you’d like). Attach the main two near your temples (get a mirror to help mark the spots). Place the others near the back.
- Starting with a piece of floral tape about 2 feet long, wrap the base of a flower; then, with the same tape, wrap the stem wire where you want the flower attached. You can use the same piece of floral tape to secure multiple flowers. If it breaks, just stick it onto your crown and repeat with a new piece. Floral tape takes a little getting used to, but once you’ve got the hang of it, you’ll be flying through this craft. We decorated only the front half of the crown with flowers but, hey, this is your crown, and you’re the queen here. Do as few or as many as you want. Keep in mind that the more flowers you add, the heavier the crown becomes.
- Finally (and this step is optional), poke the stem wire through the crown’s base and your foam limes; wrap the wire around the base. The foam is light and doesn’t take up much room. We appreciate your desire to have actual limes ready to chase those tequila shots, but they’re just too heavy on your head. Sorry, your highness.
- Cover all the wire’s loose ends with floral tape to ensure it doesn’t scratch your head or incoming hands.
- Before you place the cups on the crown, fill them with chips and dips. Put the crown on and place the cups into the holders. (Having a friend to help with this step is useful.)
