Creating something beautiful to give your mom for Mother’s Day doesn’t have to take a lot of money — or a lot of time. Even if you’re short on one or both, you can make one of these fancy candles, and give her the thoughtful gift she deserves!
Dollar stores are hidden gems when it comes to the supplies needed for unique and creative DIY gifts and projects. Spend a little time perusing the aisles, and you can fill your cart with just about everything you need for the upcoming projects you have planned.
A dollar store will have, at the very least, the white candles in various sizes you need — but if you’re lucky, you’ll be able to choose from candles in a variety of colors. If you have more than one “mom” to make gifts for, be sure to pick up enough candles for all the lucky recipients.
While you’re there, don’t forget two complimentary colors of ribbon — one color wider than the other since you’ll be layering them. Pick the flowers you think Mom will like best, making sure to get enough for each candle you are creating.
Little ones can easily get in on making these beautiful candles. If you’re making more than one, you can set up an assembly line. Wrapping the ribbon around the candle and securing it with glue is easier with an extra set of hands. Your kids will enjoy the satisfaction and pride in giving a gift they had a hand in creating.
You just might want to create these candles for other special days throughout the year, too. Just change up the colors and flowers — for example:
- Make them red, white and blue with a small flag for the 4th of July, Labor Day or Memorial Day
- Make them orange and black with a tiny pumpkin or witch for Halloween
- Create one that’s brown and yellow with fall leaves for Thanksgiving
- Make a fancy candle with red and green ribbon (and maybe gold or silver) with a sprig of mistletoe for Christmas
You can use different materials when wrapping the candle, as well. For a natural look, wrap twine (instead of ribbon) around the bottom half of the candle and finish it off with a sprig of greenery. If you’re going for a formal look, choose a lacy fabric and add a string of pearls or beads around the middle, or use sequined ribbon for added sparkle.
